Marxism 101

September 27 @ 6:00 pm - November 1 @ 9:00 pm

Join CPE this fall for Marxism 101.  Thursdays, Sept. 27-Nov. 1. Apply Now.

Do you think work, health, education, and land are vital issues? Do you hate war, exploitation, and displacement? Do you fight to win political power, social change, and freedom? Over 150 years ago philosopher, economist, and activist Karl Marx’s work and thought on these same issues went on to change the course of human history, with his ideas driving some of the most momentous political struggles in the past century.

The Center for Political Education invites you to participate in a six-part introduction to Marxist thinking and action. This will be a course for beginners during which participants will learn basics about Marxist theory and practice. With the help of guest teachers and speakers we will work together to learn about:

  • Marx’s critique of capitalism
  • essential concepts including political economy and historical materialism
  • revolutionary struggles from across the planet influenced by Marxist ideas
  • local organizing through a Marxist lens

Taking a rigorous approach to understanding how capitalism works, what and who advances history, and how to chart a vision for better world is more urgent than ever. Join us for Marxism 101!

The class sessions will be held at the Greenlining Institute in Oakland, 360 14th St, in Oakland,  on Thursdays from 6:00-9:00pm on the following dates:

  • September 27
  • October 4
  • October 11
  • October 18
  • October 25
  • November 1

Space in Marxism 101 will be limited so that the group can work deeply together. If you’re interested in the participating, please take a moment to fill out this application form thoroughly by September 19, so we can get a sense of who you are and why you are interested in taking this class. The information you provide will help us tailor the sessions to the group’s needs. While everyone should feel free to apply for this class, preference will be given to beginners to Marxism, members of working class and people of color communities, and people of color-led organizations.
