Left Strategy and the 2020 Elections
November 12 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Join Center for Political Education for a roundtable discussion on left strategy and the 2020 elections.
Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2019
518 Valencia, San Francisco, CA 94110
We are a year out from the Presidential election, and discussions about how (or whether) to engage in the electoral arena have moved to the top of the agenda for many Left forces in the United States. Mass organizations engaged in electoral work such as the Democratic Socialists of America, Our Revolution, and the Working Families Party have been growing in membership and influence while sparking debate over their strategic decisions. We are also seeing a rise in progressive candidates running for – and winning – elected office at local and state levels with the support of grassroots organizations led by working people and communities of color.
These developments raise questions such as:
*What opportunities does next year’s election open up for left forces?
*How are organizers on the left building power for the working-class and people of color?
*What actions could social movements take in this election cycle to emerge from the elections even stronger?
*What concerns do left organizers have about engaging in the electoral arena?
To help us tackle these questions, each guest speaker will give their assessment of the current political landscape and make a case for the kind of left strategy needed to shift the balance of forces beyond 2020.
Confirmed speakers include:
- Kayla Reed (Electoral Justice Project)
- Emily Lee (SF Rising Action Fund)
- Donna Willmott (Catalyst Project)
- Ted Fertik (Working Families Party)
