This event is free\, but donations for the Northern Alabama School for Organizers will be greatly appreciated. \nJoin Center for Political Education and the Highlander Research and Education Center to celebrate the release of Hy Thurman’s Revolutionary Hillbilly: Notes from the Struggle on the Edge of the Rainbow (Regent Press\, 2020).  \nSince he was a teenager\, Hy Thurman has been an inspirational grassroots organizer\, dedicating himself to improving the lives of marginalized and oppressed people and leading them into action to take control of their daily lives. A southern white migrant who settled into Chicago’s Uptown community\, in 1967 at the age of 17\, he became a community organizer and co-founder of the Young Patriot Organization\, a group of displaced southern white youth. He also was a co-founder of an interracial coalition called the original Rainbow Coalition\, made up of the Young Lords Organization\, Illinois Chapter of the Black Panther Party for self-Defense and the Young Patriot Organization. These groups\, created survival programs such as free health clinics\, breakfast for school children\, free legal services and police brutality patrols and fought urban renewal that was displacing them from their homes. Each group fought for self-determination for their communities. \nHy currently resides in Alabama and is founder\, president and Instructor of the North Alabama School for Organizers. \nContact Books to the Barricades for information about accessibility.

DESCRIPTION:Boosting People Power: \nBay Area Organizers Respond to COVID-19 Thursday\, April 2\n5-7pm (PST) \nClick Here to Register for Zoom Link \n  \nJoin Center for Political Education for an online forum on how Bay Area-based organizations are building power during the current economic and public health crisis. \nFeatured speakers include: \n\nMichelle Gutierrez-Vo\, RN\,  Board Member\, California Nurses Association\nJoyce Lam\, political director\, Chinese Progressive Association\nVanessa Moses\, executive director of Causa Justa :: Just Cause\nDiana Block\, member of California Coalition for Women Prisoners\nJessica Lehman\, executive director of Senior Disability Action\n\nAs COVID-19 courses around the globe\, the rising death toll and mounting economic crisis lay bare capitalism’s utter inability to keep us safe. As healthcare workers\, farm workers\, delivery drivers\, grocery workers\, and public service workers risk their lives to ensure our collective wellbeing\, the Trump administration continues to bail out Wall Street\, obstruct the provision of basic medical necessities\, and refuse the necessary social supports to keep people safe. Meanwhile\, the people of countries such as Iran\, Cuba\, and Venezuela are suffering under US-imposed economic sanctions that have been steadily eroding their economies and negatively impacting the provision of medical care. \nSocial movements are also confronting these crises. President Trump and a coalition of regional allies in Latin America\, anchored by right-wing governments in Brazil and Colombia\, immediately recognized Guaidó as the country’s new president. It is now apparent that Guaidó had been plotting this take-over with forces in the US\,\, Colombia and Brazil. The US government has announced billions of dollars in new sanctions against the country’s state-owned oil company PDVSA aimed at crippling Venezuela’s economy\, while cynically offering to provide humanitarian aid\, and has appointed notorious cold warrior Elliott Abrams as the US special envoy responsible for “restoring democracy in Venezuela”. \n\n\nVenezuela is undoubtedly experiencing an unprecedented political and economic crisis. The response from much of the Left within the United States has largely been one of confusion and silence. DESCRIPTION:This Saturday\, July 21\, 4pm at the Islamic Cultural Center of Northern California (1433 Madison St.\, Oakland) come hear Javier Bravo\, professor of history at the University of Guanajuato\, México and representative of MORENA who will speak on the post election situation and political crisis in México. \nIn a landslide victory\, Andres Manuel López Obrador (AMLO)\, won México’s July 1 presidential election.  AMLO represents MORENA (National Regeneration Movement — Movimiento Regeneración Nacional)\, a broad coalition that has come together to take on corruption and exploitation in Mexico’s politics. In response to AMLO’s victory\,  Mexico’s dominant political parties have flooded the country with messaging about México’s ruin under an AMLO administration meant to generate widespread fear.  Meanwhile\, the United States is expressing deep concern about the prospect losing a critical neoliberal partner in Latin America under this new administration. \nWhat does this victory mean for Mexican@s at home and in the USA?
