SUMMARY:Unmasking ICE: What Kind of Paramilitary Force is the Trump Regime Building?
DESCRIPTION:  \nICE has been at the forefront of the Trump regime’s efforts to kidnap and abuse immigrants\, silence dissent\, and invade “Blue” cities. With a massive increase in funding to ICE\, public spectacles of violent raids\, and racist demagoguery coming from ICE and administration officials\, social movements must reckon with a sobering question:  \nWhat kind of paramilitary force is the Trump regime building and to what end? \nIn this political education and training session\, we’ll analyze changes to ICE infrastructure and practices and what they mean for our efforts to stop US authoritarian rule. We’ll also discuss how ICE works closely with tech companies to surveil and enforce its violent program and what we can do to defend ourselves and our communities.

SUMMARY:Fighting Fascism: Alliances\, Coalitions and United Fronts that Defeat MAGA with Bill Fletcher Jr.
DESCRIPTION:How do we organize against authoritarian rule and fascism in the US? Center for Political Education is hosting a multi-part series to sharpen our shared understanding of how social movements in the US organize against fascist repression and violence. This series is intended to ground those newly activated by our current political crises in the history and theory of long-term working-class resistance to fascism\, while providing more experienced organizers with a unifying frame for the fight across sectors of the left. \nIn our third session\, we’re honored to host veteran activist\, labor organizer\, and political strategist Bill Fletcher Jr. for a discussion on the importance of political alliances\, coalitions and united fronts in the fight against fascism. We’ll discuss what these political formations entail\, how they’ve been historically deployed\, and the opportunities and challenges we must face head on in developing these structures to defeat MAGA today. \nRegister here: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_4sDJxl6rRayorAWxu1rmNw

SUMMARY:
DESCRIPTION:CPE is hosting a three-part series on tech capital and the administrative coup of the US government. Hostile Takeover: Tech Capital and the Coup of the US Government will feature a series of conversations among subject matter experts\, strategists\, and organizers trying to make sense of how and why the forces of capital—led by billionaire tech barons—are so determined to seize the administrative state and what its evisceration means for working-class communities in the near and long-term. \nIn our second conversation in the series\, Part 2: Endgames and Ideologies\, we’ll identify the roots of far right ideologies among tech capital; how those ideological currents engage with those among the MAGA coalition; and whether and how the endgames of tech capital align or come into tension with the broader far right projects. \nRegister here: https://bit.ly/hostilecoup \n

SUMMARY:Boosting People Power: Bay Area Organizers Respond to COVID-19
DESCRIPTION:Boosting People Power: \nBay Area Organizers Respond to COVID-19 Thursday\, April 2\n5-7pm (PST) \nClick Here to Register for Zoom Link \n  \nJoin Center for Political Education for an online forum on how Bay Area-based organizations are building power during the current economic and public health crisis. \nFeatured speakers include: \n\nMichelle Gutierrez-Vo\, RN\,  Board Member\, California Nurses Association\nJoyce Lam\, political director\, Chinese Progressive Association\nVanessa Moses\, executive director of Causa Justa :: Just Cause\nDiana Block\, member of California Coalition for Women Prisoners\nJessica Lehman\, executive director of Senior Disability Action\n\nAs COVID-19 courses around the globe\, the rising death toll and mounting economic crisis lay bare capitalism’s utter inability to keep us safe. As healthcare workers\, farm workers\, delivery drivers\, grocery workers\, and public service workers risk their lives to ensure our collective wellbeing\, the Trump administration continues to bail out Wall Street\, obstruct the provision of basic medical necessities\, and refuse the necessary social supports to keep people safe. Meanwhile\, the people of countries such as Iran\, Cuba\, and Venezuela are suffering under US-imposed economic sanctions that have been steadily eroding their economies and negatively impacting the provision of medical care. \nSocial movements are also confronting these crises. As shelter-in-place orders roll out across the US\, organizers are figuring out creative ways of practicing physical distancing while caring for our communities\, building power\, forging new alliances\, and pushing for bold demands with the possibility to expand the boundaries of what’s politically possible. \nJoin us for a moderated conversation with local organizers to learn more about: \n\nhow Bay Area movements are responding to the pandemic\nhow to organize creatively under the conditions of physical and social distancing\nsome concrete ways of supporting campaigns pushing forward transformative demands\nhow local movements are engaging with the current electoral cycle to make change at all levels of governance\nhow to be in meaningful solidarity with the working-class and communities of color across the world\, especially those most impacted by U.S. imperialism.\n\nIf you have questions or specific accessibility needs\, please email us directly at center-at-politicaleducation.org

SUMMARY:Left Strategy and the 2020 Elections
DESCRIPTION:Join Center for Political Education for a roundtable discussion on left strategy and the 2020 elections. \nTuesday\, Nov. 12\, 2019\n7-9pm\n518 Valencia\, San Francisco\, CA 94110 \nWe are a year out from the Presidential election\, and discussions about how (or whether) to engage in the electoral arena have moved to the top of the agenda for many Left forces in the United States. Mass organizations engaged in electoral work such as the Democratic Socialists of America\, Our Revolution\, and the Working Families Party have been growing in membership and influence while sparking debate over their strategic decisions. We are also seeing a rise in progressive candidates running for – and winning – elected office at local and state levels with the support of grassroots organizations led by working people and communities of color. \nThese developments raise questions such as:\n*What opportunities does next year’s election open up for left forces?\n*How are organizers on the left building power for the working-class and people of color?\n*What actions could social movements take in this election cycle to emerge from the elections even stronger?\n*What concerns do left organizers have about engaging in the electoral arena? \nTo help us tackle these questions\, each guest speaker will give their assessment of the current political landscape and make a case for the kind of left strategy needed to shift the balance of forces beyond 2020. \nConfirmed speakers include: \n\nKayla Reed (Electoral Justice Project)\nEmily Lee (SF Rising Action Fund)\nDonna Willmott (Catalyst Project)\nTed Fertik (Working Families Party)\n\n***\nAccessibility Information:\n518 Valencia St. is an ADA accessible venue.\nWe will attempt to provide a low-scent environment and will designate fragrance-free seating.\nTo request childcare\, language interpretation\, CART transcription or to meet other accessibility needs\, please contact center@politicaleducation.org by Nov. 5

SUMMARY:Defend Highlander\, Defend Our Movements!
DESCRIPTION:Join Center for Political Education\, Freedom Archives\, and Reem’s for a happy hour fundraiser at Reem’s California honoring the Highlander Research and Education Center. On March 29\, an arson attack destroyed the main office building at the Highlander Center and with it\, some of the archives stored there. On May 3\, we will raise funds to support rebuilding and continued programming at this beloved and revered movement resource and honor the crucial role in left movement building that the organization has played for nearly a century. \nDJ Baagi will be providing the tunes\, happy hour pricing on wine and beer all night\, and Reem’s food will be available for purchase.  A percentage of all sales will be donated to the Highlander Center. \nTo learn more about the fire and about Highlander Center’s pivotal role in movement building\, check out this recent article by Robin D.G. SUMMARY:RESISTING THE COUP IN VENEZUELA: Emergency Teach-In
DESCRIPTION:Join Center for Political Education for a discussion about the US-backed coup attempt in Venezuela\, the history of intervention in the region\, and discussion about what groups in the Bay Area can do to respond to this crisis.\n\n\nTuesday\, February 12\, 2019\n\n\n7-9pm\nEric Quezada Center for Culture and Politics\n\n\n518 Valencia St.\, San Francisco\n\n\n\n*accessibility information provided below*\n\n\nOn January 23rd\, Juan Guaidó\, the relatively unknown head of Venezuela’s National Assembly from the right-wing Popular Will party\, declared himself acting president and rejected President Nicolas Maduro’s swearing-in to a second term. President Trump and a coalition of regional allies in Latin America\, anchored by right-wing governments in Brazil and Colombia\, immediately recognized Guaidó as the country’s new president. It is now apparent that Guaidó had been plotting this take-over with forces in the US\,\, Colombia and Brazil. The US government has announced billions of dollars in new sanctions against the country’s state-owned oil company PDVSA aimed at crippling Venezuela’s economy\, while cynically offering to provide humanitarian aid\, and has appointed notorious cold warrior Elliott Abrams as the US special envoy responsible for “restoring democracy in Venezuela”. \n\n\nVenezuela is undoubtedly experiencing an unprecedented political and economic crisis. The response from much of the Left within the United States has largely been one of confusion and silence. Now is the time to come together\, break the silence\, and take action to resist the coup.\n\n\nThis conversation will be led by: \n\n\n” Carolina Morales\, queer Venezuelan organizer \n\n\n” Roberto Lovato\, a writer and journalist based at the San Francisco Writers’ Grotto.\n\n\nAccessibility Information:\n\n\n” 518 Valencia is a wheelchair accessible space.\n\n\n” We will do our best to provide a reduced scent space and will designate a fragance-free seating area. Please support our efforts to support the participation of community members with chemical sensitivities by coming to the event as low- or no-scent as you are able. \n\n\n” This event will be recorded and available for viewing remotely.\n\n\n” To request language interpretation\, CART transcription\, or other access needs\, please contact center-at-politicaleducation.org

SUMMARY:Organizing in the Gone City
DESCRIPTION:A conversation with Dick Walker on his latest book\,  Pictures of a Gone City: Tech and the Dark Side of Prosperity  in the San Francisco Bay Area. \nJoin LeftRoots and the The Center for Political Education for an\nevening with radical geographer Dick Walker. He will be joined by on-the-ground organizers against gentrification\, displacement\, and exploitation by the tech industry in the Bay Area\, including: \n• Vanessa Moses\, of Causa Justa Just Cause\n• Alex Tom\, of Chinese Progressive Association\n• Divya Sundar\, of ASATA – Alliance of South Asians Taking Action \nThe San Francisco Bay Area is a jewel in the crown of capitalism—the tech capital of the world and a gusher of wealth from the Silicon Gold Rush. The Bay boasts of being the Left Coast\, home of green cities\, and the best place for workers in the USA. So\, what could be wrong? \nJoin us to examine the dark side of this success: overheated\, exploding inequality\, and severe environmental damage—and how Pictures of a Gone City can help us build power and win in these changing and challenging times. \nDick Walker is one of those rare scholars who helps us understand the world in order to change it. A professor emeritus of geography at UC Berkeley\, he has long been a resource for Bay Area activists seeking to understand where we live and work\, its local dynamics and global context. Pictures of a Gone City—sweeping in scope and exquisitely detailed—examines the political economy and class structure of the region; displacement\, internal migration and the growth of its cities; and its history of environmental and political organizing. \nWheelchair accessible. \nFor more information\, email bayareacc@leftroots.net or center@politicaleducation.org
