Economic Crisis, Folding Banks, and Bailouts: Origins, Consequences and Implications for the US Left with Karl Beitel & Nedula Baguio
Karl Beitel will lead a discussion of the historical origins of the current financial mess, how Wall Street lending practices have led the US to the edge of a dangerous financial precipice, and its implications for the US working class and the future of the US imperial project. Are we on the verge of a collapse or is this just another bump in capitalism?
Karl Beitel holds a PhD in Sociology from the University of California at Davis, and has published articles in various publications and most recently in the May 2008 Monthly Review that addresses various aspects of the US global financial system and the emerging crisis of US Empire. He is also completing a book that deals with anti-gentrification struggles in San Francisco. Karl currently works as a researcher and analyst for the American Federation of Teachers.
Nedula Baguio is an artist and activist living in the Bay Area. She has written on the housing bubble and has been researching the current economic crisis for four years, watching it grow from its infancy to the current panic levels.
